Landings Credit Union was founded in 1953 as Tempe School Employees Credit Union in the rural town of Tempe, Arizona. A group of educators had the idea that if they pooled their resources, they would be able to provide affordable financial services geared specifically towards teachers’ needs. This dream became a reality and for more than 60 years, we have been strengthening our communities by providing affordable financial solutions in a family environment for our members.
In 2013, we started writing a new chapter and changed our name to Landings Credit Union. Our name carries the legacy of our humble beginnings forward; where you are connected with people who share your values and want the best for you and our community. This name reflects our commitment to our community, and working with our members to make their dreams a reality.
With financial contribution, resource donations and staff volunteerism, Landings Credit Union supports many causes in our communities. Supporting our community is about working for the greater good of those we serve. It’s about showing up, sleeves rolled, ready to get to work. Together we’re on the right path, helping our members, each other and our communities.
Tax Credit Loans
Since the late 1990’s the State of Arizona has offered tax credits for personal tax return filers. To help our educators and members take advantage of this great program to support our schools and receive a tax credit, Landings Credit Union developed a 0% interest loan program to help members make their donation. Since the program’s inception, Landings has loaned more than $2 million at 0% interest. All Education Tax Credit Loans directly benefit the local education community and help fund athletics, fine arts, educational experiences and much more. Landings is proud to support our education community through this unique program.
Back to School Clothing Drive
Each year during the month of July just before the kids head back to school, Landings Credit Union holds its annual clothing drive to benefit the Connecting With Kids Clothing Bank. Connecting with Kids is a service center funded through the TIE (Tempe Impact for Education) Foundation to provide everyday essentials to students in need so they can attend school ready to learn. Volunteers process, sort, clean and store clothing and personal articles. During the 2013 back to school clothing drive, Landings Credit Union raised more than $2,000 and was able to purchase more than 400 uniform pieces for the clothing bank.
VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance)
For the last ten tax seasons, Landings Credit Union has hosted the Tempe Community Council’s Financial Stability Initiative. This is a free-tax site geared to help hard working, low-wage earning taxpayers claim millions of dollars worth of Earned Income Tax Credits left unclaimed each year. These are dollars that help our most fragile families meet basic needs and even get ahead to build their savings toward investment in an education, a home, a brighter future and secure their dreams. During the ten years that the Tempe tax site has operated, over $15 million has been returned to the pockets of qualifying residents, while teaching them how refund dollars can be wisely used to financially stabilize themselves and their families. The program has been recognized by the IRS as a “best practice”.
Children’s Miracle Network
Landings Credit Union raises funds as part of our annual Credit Union for Kids campaign. All funds raised during the year go to benefit Phoenix’s Children’s hospital, in particular the School at Phoenix Children’s Hospital which allows students receiving treatment to keep up with their classmates while in the hospital. Throughout the year employees of Landings Credit Union donate money for the benefit of wearing jeans. Landings also holds an annual “Change A Child’s Holiday” campaign where employees sell snowmen to members or just ask them to donate the change from their deposit for our holiday campaign. Last year Landings raised more than $3000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Join us in supporting the kids at Phoenix Children’s Hospital by donating at any Landings branch during the month of December. And yes, even Santa visits PCH.
The Centers for Habilitation (TCH)
For over 15 years, Landings Credit Union has helped bring the joy of the holiday season to several TCH houses. (TCH is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support and opportunities to people of all ages with physical and developmental disabilities.) When Landings was smaller employees and Santa would visit the houses and bring presents for all the residents. As Landings grew we began to host the holiday event at the Credit Union. This holiday tradition has now become a family event for Landings employees where employees and their families have dinner with the residents, visit with Santa and share in the residents’ excitement of opening presents. Funds for this program come from the small up-charge on the discount movie, Sea World and water-park tickets sold during the year as well as the profits from the vending machine in the employee break room.
Adopt a Family
The holidays are a special time of year for many, and for the last two decades, Landings Credit Union has made the holidays brighter for families in need in our communities. Each year Landing employees adopt families from our local school districts and purchase items from their wish list. Our Credit Union has impacted countless families over the years during the holiday season and brought the magic of the season to those who need assistance. One memorable holiday was when presents were delivered and the family’s house had a dirt floor and no furniture. We asked the family what else they needed, and the next day Landing employees responded by bringing beds, tables, chairs, dressers and more to the family. In preparation for the Credit Union’s additional deliveries, the family had gone out, found some carpet to put on the floor and painted the walls. Each year has a new story and serves as a reminder that we can impact those around us by showing that we care and provide hope for a brighter future. Funds for the adopt a family program come from the small up-charge on the discount movie, Sea World and water-park tickets sold during the year as well as the profits from the vending machine in the employee break room.
Since the early 1990’s the Tempe Branch of Landings Credit Union has partnered with the Tempe Elementary School District’s Art Department to furnish decorations for the Credit Union’s holiday tree. Each fall Landings make a donation to the art department and the Art Director draws the name of a school from a hat and they are the lucky school that gets to make the decoration. Each year it’s a new theme and new colors! Each grade participates by making various items each geared to a new skill. For early elementary it’s generally making patterns with paper-chains; middle elementary works on fine motor skills creating decorations with glitter, beads and glue; the older elementary grades produce fine ornaments with detailed drawings and paper quilling. One grade is randomly chosen each year from the selected school to decorate the tree. We invite the community to come by our Tempe Branch in December to admire the creative and colorful work of our local students.
